Certain Proposals
Hello! This is my continuity project that I've been working on for the past 3 weeks. I have used an action match, follow the 180 degree rule and use a shot/reverse shot.
A special thanks to Karen Wilkinson and Robert Wilkinson for taking part in the video and a special thanks to Callum Mellis for the help editing the script!
I will be uploading this video again but it will show the captions so you can see where I've used the 180 degree rule, action match and shot/reverse shot.
Enjoy the video!
00:00 - I like the use of the title card - a little bit of music underscoring this might be nice
ReplyDelete00:05 - Good to see you using credits. When you research your title sequence, consider the order in which credits come up; usually, the director's is the last
00:08 - framing is a little off; you've cut the top of Rob's head off. You might also want to check the white-balance on the camera; it's a little pink
00:10 - similarly, we can just see the female character's arm at the edge of frame; ideally, we wouldn't
00:15 - although it's not exactly a continuity error, it's a little odd that Rob has his hand on his chin since we didn't see him put it there; you would usually include footage signposting the move
00:20 - the shout/ counter-shot works well (you are adhering to the 180 degree rule
00:24 - Rob's hand has gone from his chin...
Generally, at this point we might expect a long shot (including both characters) or some sort of close-up (just to break up the sequence) since at the moment it's all MCU.
00:31 - Rob is now leaning forward. Because we're not seeing the moves, it looks a little odd...The framing here is a little odd because the bottom of his arms are cut off and there's a fair amount of empty space above his head
00:36 - There's a very slight audio glitch before you cut to the other character. The following shot (your mum?) is very well framed (compare to the previous shot of Rob)
00:44 - I'm glad you're using a variety of shots, although slightly more difference in length would improve
00:54 - nice reaction shot!
01:10 - nasty continuity error here, again with Rob's arm (check the previous shot) - although I'm pleased to see you've gone for the MLS
01:15 - I would have gone to a close-up here; would have been a really good chance for an action match. Framing goes a bit ropey
01:19 - Slight break of the 180 degree rule here. The mother is facing left in the previous shot and is now facing right. Ideally, you would have shot this from the other side.
01:25 - the sound goes a bit wonky as he picks up the box
01:29 - a slight match error (he has both hands on the box and then in the next shot his hand is already going to his head)
Overall, you generally managed to get the 180 degree and shot/ reverse shot okay; the action matches were a little less successful, so this is something to look at next time. You might want to consider mise-en-scene and framing a little more - try to be more adventurous with the shots you chose. Be wary of working in low light - in this case, there was an issue with white balance (I can show you how to solve this). Make sure you check the audio when you are editing.
